Colourful Chinese New Year celebrations
On Tuesday 11 February our school welcomed staff and students from three other schools (C0-op Academy North Manchester, Manchester Enterprise Academy and Manchester Enterprise Academy Central), and visitors from MUTV, Arts of China and The University of Manchester to join us in an afternoon of Chinese New Year celebrations to mark the Year of the Rat 2020.
We began the afternoon with welcome speeches from Headteacher, Mr Harrison and MUTV presenter Mark Sullivan, where they both shared their personal experiences and views on the opportunities that speaking a second language, in particular Mandarin, can provide you with.
Our Teacher of Mandarin, Mrs Kirkham, then gave a presentation about the history and customs of Chinese New Year and introduced dance and rap performances from our own students; Maria Mariniuc, Nathan Yates and Kaius Robinson along with a dance performance from Miss Lu, Director of Arts of China and a demonstration of Tai Chi from Mr Jiang from the Confucius Institute at The University of Manchester.
Our afternoon continued with a carousel of workshops for the visiting students where they could sample learning Tai Chi, Chinese dance, Chinese calligraphy and paper cutting/folding. We would like to thank all our visitors for their enthusiasm taking part in the event and wish everyone a very Happy Chinese New Year!
