Parental advice from GMP about ‘sexting’

Dear parent/carer

Our contacts within Greater Manchester Police would like us to share this very important information with you around the increasing amount of crimes being recorded for indecent images, sexting and similar offences. Sexting is when someone sends or receives a sexually explicit image, video or text, usually on a mobile phone.

Greater Manchester Police’s current records show that crimes of this nature are at an all-time high among young people and expect this will increase more during lockdown. Many parents will not be aware that that sending/receiving or distributing images of this nature is a criminal offence – sometimes a victim can also be an offender.

The law on images of child abuse is clear. It is an offence to take, permit to be taken, make, possess, show, distribute or advertise indecent images of children in the United Kingdom.
